| Radio Frequency Identification - RFID is more than an automatic identification data capture method. It is actually a technology with numerous product offerings. It is an identification technology that can be embedded into most products or materials and does not require line of sight to be read. It can also be considered an invisible identification or an electronic barcode. CH&A is providing the integrated RFID solutions to Canadian business in association with RMoroz Inc.
Since RFID has the added feature of being able to be updated or written to electronically, this offers numerous capabilities and options that are not available with barcode technology. Important information such as pricing, manufacturing dates, expiry dates as well as maintenance history can be easily encoded into the tag as required.
Security codes or passwords are other options with RFID. Requirements for Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) can be part of the identification, which eliminates the need for having two technologies, one for security and one for identification.
Some RFID technologies have the ability to interface to external devices such as sensors, measuring equipment and Global Positioning System (GPS).
Although RFID operates at different frequency ranges, tags are either active or passive. There are key differences between the two types of tags. Active tags are powered by a battery while passive tags operate without power and are activated by the electromagnetic signal from the reader.
